Dear readers,

Today, I would like to discuss a often overlooked but critically important topic for your gynecological health: vaginal flora. Vaginal flora is a fascinating and complex ecosystem that plays an essential role in maintaining your intimate well-being.

Vaginal flora consists of a collection of microorganisms, primarily beneficial bacteria, that colonize the vaginal wall. These bacteria serve several crucial roles in protecting your health:

Protection against infections: The good bacteria in vaginal flora prevent the proliferation of harmful bacteria. They maintain an acidic environment (vaginal pH) that makes it difficult for pathogenic germs to survive. This helps prevent bacterial and fungal infections.

Maintaining balance:

A delicate balance among different types of bacteria is essential for a healthy vaginal flora. Any imbalance can lead to infections and irritations.

Preventing sexually transmitted infections:

A balanced vaginal flora can provide some protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, it's important to note that protection is not absolute, and the use of condoms remains essential for STI prevention.

Supporting reproductive health:

A healthy vaginal flora is particularly crucial during pregnancy as it can help prevent complications such as urinary tract infections and upper genital tract infections.

How to care for your vaginal flora:

- Use lukewarm water:

Wash the external area with lukewarm water. Avoid using water that is too hot as it can cause irritation.

- Avoid scented products: Steer clear of scented soaps, perfumed shower gels, and scented wipes as fragrances and chemicals can disrupt the natural balance of vaginal flora and cause irritations.

- Opt for gentle products: Use a mild, pH-balanced soap specifically designed for feminine hygiene. These products are formulated to be gentle and respectful of the vulvar area.

- Front-to-back cleansing: When washing after using the toilet, ensure you do so from front to back to avoid introducing bacteria from the anus to the vagina.

- Avoid vaginal douches: Allow the vagina to regulate its flora naturally. Avoid vaginal douches as they can disrupt the natural balance of the vagina and increase the risk of infections.

- Wear cotton underwear: Opt for cotton underwear, which allows the skin to breathe and reduces the risk of irritation.

- Avoid tight clothing: Tight clothing can create an environment conducive to moisture and heat buildup, which can promote bacterial growth.

- Be aware of changes: If you notice itching, irritation, unusual odors, or abnormal discharge, consult a healthcare professional. These symptoms could indicate an infection or an underlying health issue.

Taking care of your vaginal flora is essential for maintaining your gynecological well-being.

By understanding its role and adopting good hygiene practices, you can help prevent infections and maintain a healthy vaginal balance.

Remember to regularly consult your gynecologist for check-ups and personalized health advice. Your gynecological well-being is precious, and vaginal flora plays a key role in preserving it.

Take care of yourself.

Kind regards,

Dr. Sandra Yene Amougui
